The incident, which occurred on April 26, has drawn scrutiny from multiple agencies and raised concerns from the inmate’s family.

According to a report by Alan Domingo on GMA Regional TV News, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), and the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) are each conducting separate inquiries into the case.

The probes aim to determine not only the cause of death but also whether any lapses or misconduct occurred within the facility.

“We’ve already dispatched a quick response operation to check not just on the death but also on the possible administrative liability of the personnel in the facility,” said Atty. Stanley Tibon, Chief Investigator of CHR Region 7.

The 37-year-old detainee was reportedly found unconscious inside the jail and was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival. His death certificate lists “sudden cardiac death” or acute coronary syndrome as the cause.

However, the family of the deceased has expressed doubts about the official findings. They claim the inmate was in good health during their last visit and had not complained of any illness.

They also alleged that bruises were found on his body, raising suspicions that he may have been physically harmed while in custody.

The inmate had been accused of r@ping an 11-year-old girl in Cebu City and was arrested in Manila last March. His family maintains that he should have been allowed to face the charges in court.
