The award-winning actress looked back on a difficult chapter of her life through an Instagram post, recalling January 7, 2019, the day that eventually became a turning point in her career.
At the time, Dolly believed she was only attending a callback audition for the film “Triangle of Sadness.” However, the opportunity became an interview with Swedish filmmaker Ruben Östlund, who was looking for the actress who would portray the character Abigail.
Dolly shared that she initially had little confidence about getting the role despite auditioning months earlier.

“I had auditioned three months prior and was convinced I wasn’t going to get it. Only to learn from my friend Jake Macapagal who convinced me to audition in the first place that I had a chance to book the job,” she wrote.
The actress also opened up about her living situation during that period, revealing that she and her children were staying in a unit in Cainta that was generously offered by a friend without rent.
Amid the struggles she was facing, Dolly admitted that she considered walking away from her acting career if she did not get the role.
“I had washed my crystals in salt and laid them out on my window sill under the light of the moon and made a deal with my Creator. ‘If I don’t get this job I will quit being an actor’,” she recalled.
She also reflected on the personal battles she experienced during that time, including leaving a relationship she described as toxic.

“I look at this long-haired hopeful and remember what she went through seven years ago and think to myself—it was all worth it. All the rejections, the heartache, the letdowns, mistakes, disappointments, bad choices, failures—they all happened for a reason,” Dolly shared.
Her role as Abigail in “Triangle of Sadness” eventually became a career-defining moment. Released in 2022, the film introduced her to a wider international audience and earned her historic nominations at the Golden Globe Awards and BAFTA for Best Supporting Actress.
Since then, Dolly has continued to expand her international career through projects such as “Ghostlight,” “Between the Temples,” and “Jackpot!” alongside Hollywood stars Awkwafina and John Cena.
She is also set to appear in major upcoming projects, including the live-action adaptation of “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the series “Nine Perfect Strangers” starring Nicole Kidman, and the comedy-thriller crime series “Maximum Pleasure Guaranteed” featuring Tatiana Maslany.
Through her journey, Dolly continues to remind aspiring artists and dreamers that setbacks do not define their future.
“For you who are reading this till the end: whatever it is you’re going through, whatever it is you’re pursuing, keep at it. IT GETS BETTER. I promise,” she said.
