His legal counsel, Atty. Mark Tolentino, confirmed the development through a Facebook post, noting that they are now processing the necessary steps for Sonza’s release.
“We welcome this development and are taking the necessary steps to secure his immediate release,” Tolentino said.
Sonza has been detained at the National Bureau of Investigation facility in Muntinlupa City since his arrest last Friday. Authorities apprehended him based on a warrant tied to allegations of unlawful use of means of publication and unlawful utterances under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code, in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.

The charges stem from accusations that Sonza spread false information on social media regarding the health condition of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
Meanwhile, Tolentino revealed that the arraignment scheduled for Monday did not proceed after their camp submitted a motion seeking the dismissal of the case.
Earlier, Sonza’s legal team questioned the initial classification in the arrest warrant, which stated that the offense was non-bailable.
According to Tolentino, the court later acknowledged the error and clarified that the charge is bailable as a matter of right.
“The Honorable Court clarified that the offense is bailable as a matter of right, and that it had allegedly been waiting for the accused to post bail over the weekend,” he explained.
Tolentino added that they accepted the court’s apology despite the situation.
“In good faith, and in the interest of moving forward, Manong Jay Sonza and undersigned counsel humbly accept the apology of the Honorable Court— despite the fact that he was unjustly deprived of his liberty for five days,” he said.
Sonza is also facing a separate cyberlibel case before another Pasay court branch, with his legal team awaiting further developments.
