Sonza was arrested on Thursday evening in Quezon City over allegations that he spread false information regarding the health of Ferdinand Marcos Jr..
The case falls under unlawful publication, a charge that his lawyer argues is typically considered a minor offense.

“Under prevailing rules and practice, this is ordinarily treated as a bailable offense, and in many instances, courts do not immediately issue a warrant of arrest but instead proceed by way of summons,” he explained in an interview.
He further questioned the court’s action. “Given this, the issuance of a non-bailable warrant is, with due respect, highly irregular and legally questionable,” Tolentino added.
The legal team intends to elevate the matter before the Pasay Regional Trial Court Branch 118, where they will file motions seeking to recall or nullify the arrest warrant. They are also expected to request clarification on the proper application of bail in the case.
“We will also assert all available remedies to protect our client’s rights and ensure full compliance with due process,” Tolentino said.
Earlier, the National Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the warrant was issued under Article 154 of the Revised Penal Code in relation to the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012.
NBI Director Melvin Matibag emphasized that decisions on bail now rest with “We just enforce the warrant,” he said, noting that the issuance was based on prosecutors’ recommendations.
