According to the supplied report from GMA’s State of the Nation (SONA), the female victims were inside the boarding house when the fire broke out that morning.

“Dalawang estudyante ang nasawi sa sunog sa isang residential compound sa Cagayan de Oro City,” the report stated.

One of the students was the daughter of the boarding house owner. After being informed that the property was burning, the parent tried to contact her by phone.

The daughter was still inside the boarding house at the time, according to the owner’s account. However, she did not answer the calls.

The report did not explain why the students were unable to escape or describe the circumstances that left them trapped inside the building.

By noon, the remains of two victims had been recovered from the property. Relatives and friends positively identified them, according to the supplied segment.

The incident happened in Barangay Nazareth on Friday morning, October 9, based on GMA News’ accompanying report. Its regional coverage also confirmed that two female students died in the boarding house fire.

Meanwhile, the SONA segment said the blaze reached the third alarm. Its cause had not yet been determined at the time of reporting.
