Lydia de Vega, a world-renowned Pinoy sprint legend and once touted as the fastest woman in Asia, has passed on at the age of 57 years old.

According to a news report by the Inquirer, the Pinoy sprint legend has been battling with cancer.

In her Facebook post late Wednesday, August 10, Stephanie said that her mother fought a “good fight and is now at peace.”

“On behalf of our family, it is with absolute grief that I announce the death of my mother, Lydia De Vega this evening, August 10, 2022, at the Makati Medical Center. She fought the very good fight and is now at peace,” the post on Stephanie’s FB account read.

A Rappler report cited Lydia as among the most decorated athletes in the Philippines sports history, having amassed around 15 gold medals in various international competitions, including nine from the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games.

A report by CNN, on the other hand, recalled the time when Lydia was called the fastest woman in Asia in the 80s after dominating the 100-meter dash competition during the 1982 and 1986 Asian Games.

Lydia de Vega is part of the "Gintong Alay Track & Field" program way back in 1979. She was first coached by her father, Tatang De Vega and later on by Claro Pellosis. She first gained fame during the 1981 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games held in Manila at the 200 and 400-meter events where she surpassed all records made at the Asian Games.

Recently, her daughter, through a social media post, said that the condition of the track star is critical because of her stage 4 cancer. She said that it was back in 2018 when her cancer was discovered, though this was never disclosed to the public. According to her daughter, the condition of her mother went downhill from there despite the medical procedures she underwent.

Lydia was one of the most decorated athletes in the country. She gave several gold medals to the Philippines through her winnings in various international competitions.
