During an interview on “Oh My Gan!,” Umali recalled losing her mother to breast cancer when she was only five years old. Five years later, she experienced another devastating loss when her father died from a heart attack.

Because she was still very young, Umali admitted that she could not fully comprehend the gravity of what was happening around her.

“I only have flashes of memories. Very few memories with my mom. Very few memories pa na yun are most of it she was already sick,” she recalled.

Much of what she remembered about her mother involved seeing her undergo treatment while being kept at a distance because of her illness.

Umali said she had more vivid memories with her father, who became both a mother and father figure after her mother’s death.

“I was really a daddy’s girl. And I loved being a daddy’s girl. My dad became both a mom and a dad to me,” she said.

She remembered spending time with him through simple activities, including accompanying him to work, watching him work on his motorcycle, taking road trips, and singing and playing the guitar together.

However, another tragedy came when Umali was 10. Her father suffered a heart attack on what would have been her mother’s birthday.

The actress recalled being with him inside the vehicle as they rushed toward the hospital and watched him struggle to breathe. He was eventually declared dead on arrival.

“I both saw their last breaths,” Umali revealed.

She said the experience left her unable to immediately process her grief because she did not yet have the understanding or emotional tools to deal with such profound loss.

“I don’t think I was skilled to process anything. I didn’t know, I didn’t even know what questions to ask, or who to ask or where do I go?” she said.
“Anak ako ng dalawang tao na nawala, so saan ako mapupunta?” she added.

As she grew older, however, Umali began to understand the lasting effect of becoming an orphan at such a young age.

“Yung naging effect ng naulila ako nang maaga is that yung pagproseso ko at pag-intindi ko ng mga bagay slowly happens as I have gotten older,” she explained.

Despite everything she experienced, Umali said she never blamed or questioned God for the losses she endured.

“I never did. Up until this day, I never did. I never do. And I never will,” she said.

Rather than allowing her childhood experiences to become a reason for self-pity, Umali said she chose to treat them as part of the journey that made her stronger.

“I choose to look at it not as something that I will pity myself for. I choose to look at it as something that I have become strong because of my experiences,” she said.
“Naulila ako because ganun kalakas yung tingin sa akin ng Lord. Alam niyang kaya ko. Alam niyang ganun ka-strong yung puso’t isip ko,” she added.

After losing her parents, Umali was raised by her grandmother, Mama Vicky, together with several cousins. She recalled that there were times when as many as 15 girls lived under the same roof.

For the actress, her grandmother became a central figure in helping her move forward and eventually pursue her dreams in show business.

“I call my lola my superhero kasi sinagip niya ako. If it wasn’t for her, I wouldn’t be where I am now, I wouldn’t be who I am now,” she said.

Mama Vicky also supported Umali during the early stages of her career despite having limited resources. The two would travel from Parañaque to Quezon City through various forms of public transportation so the young actress could attend auditions.

One particularly memorable experience happened inside a mall, where Umali said her grandmother personally approached stores and asked if they could sponsor her.

“Nilako niya ako,” Umali said with a laugh.
“Inisa-isa namin yung mga stores sa department store,” she added.

Although none of the stores eventually contacted them, Umali said the experience remained meaningful because it showed just how much her grandmother believed in her.

“Every time I would go back to that, it’s a humbling experience… That reminds me of why I want to continue doing what I do and why I want to achieve more,” she said.

Now, Umali and her cousins are continuing the spirit of generosity they experienced from Mama Vicky by helping the younger members of their family.

“Kung ano yung ginawa para sa amin ng lola namin, gagawin din namin yun para sa iba,” she said.

Among the most important lessons Umali learned from her grandmother is the value of loving without expecting anything in return.

“Madali kasing magmahal, pero hindi madaling magmahal na hindi ka rin nag-e-expect ng pagmamahal in return,” she said.

“Yung lola ko, she was that selfless. She gave everything she had, including herself, to us without anything in return,” she added.

While the loss of her parents remains an important part of her story, Umali said she has learned to face life's difficulties with faith and perspective.

“Lahat ng pagdadaanan natin sa buhay, it will pass. This too shall pass,” she said.
“We have different levels of pain. We all have different sets of experiences. But whatever those experiences are, good or bad, there will be a reason for that,” she added.
