Vilma Santos has addressed the renewed discussions surrounding her not being named among the recently declared National Artists, saying she has long believed that what is meant for her will eventually happen.

The veteran actress spoke about the issue during the talkback session of a special screening of Sister Stella L at the Metropolitan Theater. Santos was asked to react to Vilmanians and other supporters who have been discussing online why she was not included among the latest National Artists.
For Santos, however, the matter is not something she intends to dwell on.
“Napakatagal na issue na. But at the end of the day prinsipyo ko na ever since sa buhay ay if it's meant to be it is meant to be, if it is for you, it is for you. Kung hindi ka nasasali it is fine with me,” she said.

Rather than focus on what she did not receive, Santos highlighted the blessings that have already come from her six decades in the entertainment industry.
“Sa animnapu’t taon ko sa industriya, palagay ko ang naibalik sa akin ng industriya ay malaking regalo na,” she said.
The actress also urged people not to allow the issue to become a source of negativity, particularly when discussions can cross the line.
“If we talk about this issue, may nangyayari lang below the belt. Hindi na natin dapat patulan, there is so much more in life. Do not think of any negativity dahil hindi napupunta sayo. Maybe it is not meant to be. Again at the end of the day, life has to go on,” she said.
At 72, Santos said her attention has shifted toward the people and things that matter most to her. She emphasized that she now wants to enjoy life after spending decades dealing with competition and the demands of her career.
“Wala nang ibang pwedeng magmaneho ng buhay ko. Because it is time that I enjoy life naman. Kasi lagi ako may ka kompetesyon. This time ako naman,” she said.
She then shared the three things she considers her priorities at this stage of her life.
“And now that I am 72, tatlo na lang priority ko. I am praying to God to take care of my family, health of the people I love, and third to protect my peace. I think yan pinaka important at this point in time.”
Santos was also asked whether her public service could affect her chances of eventually being named a National Artist. She currently serves as governor of Batangas and said she would rather fulfill the responsibility entrusted to her by her constituents.
For Santos, her present focus remains clear: continuing her public service, caring for her loved ones, and protecting her peace while allowing life to unfold on its own.
