Martin made the emotional revelation during the sixth episode of Gary Valenciano's podcast Unshaken, where the two reflected on their long friendship and careers in the entertainment industry.
The conversation initially centered on Gary's first impression of Martin, recalling how the singer was already a major star during one of their earliest encounters.

"The first time I met him was in a place called Miriam College. At that time, it was called Maryknoll..." Gary recalled.
Gary also praised Martin's ability to naturally connect with audiences, saying he had consistently admired the singer's warmth and communication skills both on and off the stage.
"I love talking about the journey I've had with this man, Martin... You've been consistent from that time until today, being a solid friend," Gary said.
Martin responded by explaining that his stage presence was shaped by years of learning from his own mistakes and by staying genuine with his audience.
"Because I am a person. And I think that sometimes I read the minds of my audience..." Martin shared.
Gary then pointed out how Martin has a unique way of inviting audience members to participate in his performances without making them feel embarrassed, prompting him to ask where that compassion came from.
Martin revealed that it stemmed from the painful experiences he endured as a child.
"I've always been, as a child, I've always been picked on. I've always been bullied. I used to have lunch with special kids, with obese kids, with very skinny kids. Races back in the '70s and '80s were really awful," he said.
He explained that he often stayed with fellow students who also felt isolated because he was trying to avoid bullies.
"I would have lunch and recess with them, because I would be hiding along with them... I was always a fat kid," he added.
According to Martin, his mother's insistence on dressing him neatly in tucked-in shirts, belts, and penny loafers made him stand out even more in Hawaii's public schools.
"So I was always picked on as a kid because my mom always made me wear clothes — you tuck in your shirt, you wear a belt, and you wear penny loafers... I would get beat up a lot. I would get my lunch money stolen. Because I went to public schools all over America, where I grew up," he recalled.
Martin also shared that his twin sister, Vicky, would often defend him whenever he was bullied, although it usually resulted in even more harassment afterward.
"Vicky, my twin sister, would fight for me... So the following day, I would get beat up even more because 'Why is your sister fighting your battles?'" he said.
Looking back, Martin believes those difficult years taught him empathy, especially when interacting with fans during his performances.
"I think it's that being so defeated all the time... I don't make fun of them because I know what that feels like. I've been there before," he said.
