According to a report aired by GMA News 24 Oras on Wednesday, video footage captured the jeepney traveling toward a motorcycle that was stopped along the road in Barangay Vicente, near a school. The impact left the young passenger critically injured.
The nine-year-old victim was rushed to a hospital but did not survive. The child’s five-year-old sibling and their grandfather, who had been bringing the children to the area, were also injured in the collision.
Authorities later determined that the jeepney driver allegedly fell asleep while behind the wheel. Police arrested the driver following the incident, and he may face charges in connection with the child’s death and the injuries suffered by the other passengers.

The crash has also drawn attention to another road accident reported in Catanduanes involving an alleged sleeping driver.
In the town of Viga, a driver of a closed van, identified as an L-300, reportedly fell asleep while driving before the vehicle crashed into a store.
Five people were injured in that separate incident, including two minors and a senior citizen. The victims sustained injuries after the van struck the establishment.
The two incidents occurred in the same province and involved allegations that the drivers lost consciousness or fell asleep while operating their vehicles.
Authorities continue to handle the respective investigations and determine the appropriate charges arising from the accidents. The incidents also highlight the potentially serious consequences of driving while excessively tired or without adequate rest, particularly when passengers and other road users are at risk.
In a separate incident, a 51-year-old former police officer was shot dead while on his way home in Quezon, Nueva Ecija. Authorities are looking into a previous dispute between the victim and the alleged gunman as a possible motive for the killing. The suspect, a businessman in the area, later surrendered to police and turned over his licensed firearm. Murder charges have since been filed against him as investigators continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the fatal shooting.
Meanwhile, police in Agdao District, Davao City, arrested a 33-year-old man over an alleged assault involving a minor inside an internet café. Authorities said the incident allegedly occurred when the suspect and the young victim were left alone at the establishment. The victim later told relatives about what allegedly happened, prompting the family to report the matter to police. The suspect remains in custody and is facing formal charges after reportedly refusing to issue a statement regarding the allegations.
