A nursing home in Pitrufquén, Chile, was destroyed by a fire that left 16 senior citizens dead and 10 others rescued.

According to a report by GMA's Unang Balita, the fire struck a care facility in the southern part of Chile. Authorities are continuing their investigation into what caused the blaze.
Verified reports identified the facility as El Edén, a home for older adults located in Villa Comuy in the commune of Pitrufquén, La Araucanía region.
The fire reportedly started at around 10:30 p.m. on Friday, September 11. Firefighters from Pitrufquén and nearby communities responded to the emergency, together with police officers and medical teams.

A total of 26 residents were inside the nursing home when the fire broke out. Ten people were successfully evacuated, while authorities later confirmed that 16 residents had died.
Emergency teams worked through the night to control the flames. The fire was extinguished during the early hours of Saturday, September 12, allowing authorities to continue their work at the scene.
Local authorities expressed their grief following the tragedy.
“We express our sorrow and dismay at the deaths of 16 elderly people in this tragedy,” officials from the municipality of Pitrufquén said.
The exact cause of the fire has yet to be established. Specialized police units and prosecutors were tasked with investigating the origin of the blaze and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Reports also indicated that the nursing home had previously faced regulatory concerns over its operations. Authorities are expected to examine the facility's conditions as part of the wider investigation.
Emergency personnel from several nearby areas were deployed to respond to the fire. The facility was located in La Araucanía, a region hundreds of kilometers south of Chile's capital, Santiago.
Authorities are now focusing on the investigation as well as assistance for the survivors and the families affected by the tragedy.
Officials are also expected to determine whether required safety and operating standards were being followed at the facility when the fire occurred.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead outside a school in Barangay Prinza, Teresa, Rizal, on Thursday afternoon, triggering a police manhunt and leaving his family grieving. According to a report by GMA News' "Unang Balita," the victim was shot in the head at around 4 p.m. The gunman reportedly escaped immediately after the attack. A viral video of the incident showed the victim lying on the ground while his live-in partner stayed beside him carrying their infant child. Barangay officials and tanods quickly responded to clear the area, especially after students and residents gathered near the scene.
