A Grade 8 student from San Mateo National High School in Rizal was injured after his teacher allegedly struck him on the nose with a rattan stick used for arnis.

The incident was featured in an exclusive report by Gabriel Gonzalez on GMA News' Unang Balita.

According to the student's father, the learner's nose bridge was swollen after the alleged incident on Wednesday. The father said his son told him that the teacher had hit him with the stick.

The parent claimed that the teacher did not allow the student to leave the school even after 6 p.m. His son reportedly had to attend a prayer meeting where he served as a musician.

When the learner tried to leave, the teacher allegedly became angry and struck him.

The father said he later learned that it was not the first time his son had allegedly been hit. The student claimed the teacher had struck him on the head with the same stick on several occasions during the school year.

Asked why he did not report the earlier incidents, the learner said he did not want to add to his parents' worries.

“Ayoko na pong magpadagdag ng problema po kay Daddy at kay Mommy,” the student explained. He also said he hoped to maintain a good relationship with the teacher.

The family had the incident entered in the barangay blotter on Wednesday evening. They met with the teacher and the school principal the following day.

According to the father, the principal said the student could be moved to another section. He added that the teacher was told not to use the stick or any similar object to discipline learners.

In a statement to GMA News, the teacher said an apology had already been made to the student and his family. The educator also claimed that the family accepted it.

The teacher said they took their duties seriously and believed in accountability and fairness.

The school administration said it was conducting an investigation. It added that the inquiry would continue even though the family and the teacher had reportedly reached an agreement.

The father clarified that accepting the apology did not mean he would no longer pursue a complaint.

“Nag-sorry, then I forgive. But kailangan mong harapin kung ano 'yung consequences ng ginagawa mo,” he said.

DepEd Rizal has also received the school's report. An official said the division was waiting for an order from the regional director before beginning its investigation.

The agency stressed that teachers have the authority and responsibility to discipline learners, but that power has limits.

“Ang teachers may authority and responsibility to discipline learners, pero hindi siya unlimited,” the official said.

Under DepEd Order No. 40, series of 2012, discipline must be positive, nonviolent, and corrective. The policy prohibits physical, psychological, sėxual, and other forms of violence against children.

Recently, a mother and her 13-year-old son were injured after they were allegedly attacked with a bolo while sleeping inside their home in Barangay Paril, Cebu City. According to a report on GMA's Unang Balita, the incident happened after the 22-year-old suspect reportedly caused trouble during a dance in the barangay.
