This sweeping legal action follows the heartbreaking drowning deaths of student-athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during an off-season team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Delivered with high-stakes urgency, this development completely reframes the tragedy, turning what was initially reported as a freak accident into a intense criminal investigation into hazardous training practices.

According to authorities, the young basketball players were allegedly subjected to grueling physical exertion, agonizing punishment exercises, and extreme sea-based drills under highly dangerous conditions before the two athletes tragically lost their lives on June 8.

As noted in a report by GMA News Online, the list of recommended respondents casts a wide net over the team's inner circle, explicitly naming assistant coaches, strength trainers, physical therapists, student managers, and even utility staff.

The fresh findings have completely shattered previous public narratives surrounding the sports program's disciplinary methods.

Remulla directly challenged the coaching staff's defensive stance, pointing out that former players have bravely stepped forward to testify about similar near-drowning scares at the exact same coastal spot back in 2016, flatly contradicting prior claims that no such dangers existed.

The government is making it loud and clear that modern laws protect amateur athletes from physical and psychological torment disguised as elite mental conditioning.

"Hindi po ito tungkol sa training o hazing. Ito’y tungkol rin sa mga karapatan ng mga manlalaro," Remulla emphasized, making a firm stand for athlete welfare.

The secretary also issued a stern warning to athletic programs across the country, making sure everyone knows the government will no longer turn a blind eye to reckless team traditions.

"Ito rin po ay sana maging leksyon para sa lahat ng mga organisasyon na ang ganitong klaseng bagay ay hindi pwedeng dalhin sa magaanang paraan lamang. Hazing is not only initiations, hazing can occur in any organization," he added.

The Department of Justice (DOJ) has officially taken hold of the police referral and is performing a swift initial review to see if the case will move forward to a formal preliminary investigation.

On the campus front, Ateneo de Manila University is handling the situation with solemn cooperation, expressing deep respect for the police findings through spokesperson Fr. Rene “RB” Hizon, SJ.

Concurrently, university president Fr. Roberto "Bobby" Yap personally gave his formal statement to the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), sharing that they have extended deep apologies and are continuing to provide all necessary assistance to the grieving families.
