“It's extremely, extremely difficult; just know that we are with you and praying for you, we're all behind you,” he added.
Tiu played for the Ateneo Blue Eagles from 2003 to 2008 and remains one of the university's most recognized athletes. His message came as many members of the Ateneo community continue to mourn the loss of Baterbonia and Adili.
The two student-athletes died after drowning during a team-building activity held in Dipaculao, Aurora, on June 8. The incident prompted calls for a closer review of safety measures in athletic training and team activities.
In response, Ateneo announced that a multi-stakeholder body composed of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas (SBP), the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP), the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), and the National Youth Commission (NYC) will examine current policies and training practices.
According to the commission, the review aims to strengthen safeguards for athletes and prevent similar incidents in the future.
“The goal is not only to understand what happened, but to ensure that lessons learned lead to safer, more responsive systems that protect athletes while sustaining high-performance sport.”
The statement further emphasized the importance of balancing athletic excellence with athlete welfare.
“Excellence in sport requires environments that push human potential, but never at the expense of safety.”
Meanwhile, Ateneo continues to honor the memories of the two student-athletes. Rene Baterbonia is scheduled to be laid to rest on June 24, while the remains of Divine Adili were flown back to Nigeria on June 23 so that her family could hold funeral arrangements in her home country.
As the university community grieves, messages of support such as Tiu’s continue to offer comfort and solidarity to those affected by the tragedy.
Chris Tiu is a retired Filipino professional basketball player, television host, and entrepreneur who first rose to prominence as the star captain of the Ateneo Blue Eagles and later played for the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters in the PBA. Beyond his athletic achievements, he is widely recognized as a versatile media personality, hosting popular educational and lifestyle shows like GMA Network's iBilib, while also managing several successful business ventures.
In another report, Doug Kramer called on the public to extend financial assistance and support to the families of Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili following their tragic deaths. The former Ateneo Blue Eagles standout encouraged people to focus on helping those left behind rather than dwelling on speculation surrounding the incident. To ensure that contributions would reach the intended recipients, he shared verified donation channels authorized by the families.
Meanwhile, Ateneo Blue Eagles head coach Tab Baldwin publicly addressed the deaths of Divine Adili and Rene Baterbonia, acknowledging his personal feelings of responsibility in the aftermath of the tragedy. In a pre-recorded video statement, Baldwin admitted that he felt he had fallen short as a leader, coach, and friend while sharing his perspective on the team-building activity where the incident occurred. He previously appeared at a candle-lighting vigil held on the Ateneo campus on June 11, as calls for accountability continued from members of the sports community and Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Patrick Gregorio.
