“Inday Badiday na ba tayo dito?” Zubiri said as he criticized the allegations, calling them “propaganda” and “fake news.”

The remark did not sit well with IC, who later voiced his disappointment through social media. The television personality stressed that his grandmother’s legacy extended far beyond celebrity gossip and entertainment rumors.

In his Facebook post, IC highlighted how Lourdes became a major influence in Philippine entertainment journalism and helped shape conversations surrounding media and pop culture for many years.

“She was more than showbiz chika and intrigues. She helped shape local pop culture and the entertainment journalism landscape of her time, and her work influenced conversations around media and entertainment for generations,” he shared.

IC also pointed out that using his grandmother’s name as a comparison for the ongoing tensions in politics was hurtful to their family.

“Reducing her name and legacy to describe the ‘circus’ happening in the Senate is offensive,” he continued. “Ang tagal nang patay ng lola ko (My grandmother has been dead for a long time). Please leave her out of your political commentaries and analogies.”

After the issue gained attention online, Zubiri issued a public apology and admitted that the statement was a “slip of the tongue.” He also emphasized that he has long respected Lourdes and acknowledged her contributions to Philippine television and media.

The senator explained that his reaction came from frustration over the discussions happening during the Senate proceedings and clarified that he never intended to insult the late broadcaster’s memory.

“I take full responsibility because I should have been more careful with my words,” Zubiri stated. “My frustration was about the video shown on the Senate floor, and I never meant to disrespect her memory or reduce her legacy to politics.”

He further agreed with IC’s sentiments, saying Lourdes should not have been involved in political exchanges.

“Tama si IC Mendoza, dapat hindi na nadamay ang lola niya sa usaping pulitika. Kaya muli, I apologize deeply to the family and I will be more mindful moving forward,” he added.

IC eventually acknowledged the apology and expressed appreciation for the senator’s response. In a social media post shared on Tuesday, May 26, he said he understood Zubiri’s frustration and believed there was no malicious intent behind the remark.

“I also get where you’re coming from and your frustration. And yes, I’m sure you meant no malice by it,” IC wrote.

The TV personality then explained why the comparison still came as a surprise to their family, especially because of how his grandmother’s name became associated with issues involving misinformation.

“Kilala talaga siya for showbiz intrigues, but it just felt off seeing her memory associated with fake news peddlers. Kaya that's what caught us by surprise. But all good!”

IC ended his message by thanking the senator for apologizing and encouraging him in his public service.

“Thank you for this Senator Migz. Appreciate it, Keep fighting the good fight.”
