The issue gained attention after actor IC Mendoza, grandson of Inday Badiday, expressed disappointment over the senator’s remarks, saying his grandmother should not have been dragged into a political discussion involving charter change allegations.
In a formal statement, Zubiri directly apologized to the bereaved family.
“Sa buong pamilya of the late Inday Badiday, I am sincerely sorry for mentioning her name during my manifestation sa Senado,” he said.

He admitted the remark happened during a tense exchange inside the chamber.
“Slip of the tongue po iyon in the middle of a heated debate, and I take full responsibility because I should have been more careful with my words,” Zubiri added.
The senator stressed that there was no intent to disrespect the late TV icon, whom he described as part of Philippine pop culture and widely loved by Filipinos.
“I respect Inday Badiday… bahagi siya ng pop culture natin and she was loved by so many Filipinos,” he said.
Zubiri also acknowledged her contribution to Philippine television and media, calling her “lovable” with “charm, wit and warmth.”
He clarified that his frustration during the Senate session was directed at a video presentation on the floor, not at Inday Badiday’s legacy.
“My frustration was about the video shown on the Senate floor, and I never meant to disrespect her memory,” he said.
He later reiterated his apology and said he would be more careful with his words moving forward.
Juan Miguel "Migz" Zubiri is a veteran Filipino politician who has served multiple terms as a senator of the Philippines and previously represented the 3rd district of Bukidnon. A prominent legislative leader, he has held key positions in government including serving as the 30th Senate President from 2022 to 2024 and multiple terms as Senate Majority Leader.
In another report, Senator Erwin Tulfo pushed back against Senator Pia Cayetano’s statement suggesting that minority bloc senators failed to check on colleagues during the Senate shooting incident. Tulfo clarified that there was actually active communication through an official WhatsApp group that included both majority and minority members of the chamber. He added that Senators Kiko Pangilinan, Bam Aquino, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Camille Villar were among those included in the group chat updates.
Meanwhile, Ogie Diaz reacted to Senator Rodante Marcoleta’s strong statements regarding alleged discussions of a Senate coup. Marcoleta had earlier labeled as “traitors” individuals who might consider shifting loyalty within the Senate majority bloc. Diaz implied that the senator could be feeling uneasy over possible realignments in political alliances. The issue came amid heightened tensions following the unrest in the Senate last May 13.
