In a recent interview, the veteran singer recalled some of the most painful moments his family experienced while trying to support Gab. Gary said that although his son encountered significant challenges, the presence of loved ones played an important role in helping him move forward.
Gab previously spoke publicly in 2019 about his sùicide attempts and the support he received from his family and friends.
“We encountered problems with Gabriel. We noticed that he had that middle child syndrome that most people talk about, but it was not just that,” Gary shared.

The singer also remembered an incident when Gab contacted his parents during the early hours of the morning to apologize for something he had done to himself.
“So Angeli and I looked at each other. We were in bed and we rushed to his place. To make the long story short, we were able to enter his place. It was messy, he didn’t look good and I ended up carrying him on my back from his room to the elevator,” he recalled.
Gary said he and his wife, Angeli Pangilinan, immediately brought Gab to Makati Medical Center, where he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder.
“We brought him down and took him to Makati Med. It was at that time that he was diagnosed to be bipolar but it didn’t end there,” he added.
Another frightening episode occurred while Gary and Angeli were in the United States and Gab remained in the Philippines. According to Gary, Gab’s then-girlfriend stayed with him and helped prevent the situation from becoming more serious.
“His ex-girlfriend, who I’m thankful for, was holding on to him as he was latching on to the railing of his 27-storey condominium. He stepped out of the ledge and was hanging on to the rail with one finger. He was looking at her and said ‘look I just have to let go of this finger and it’s gonna be quick’,” Gary recalled.
Gary said a neighbor’s light from a lower balcony ultimately caught Gab’s attention and helped him recognize the seriousness of what was happening.
Since those incidents, Gab has continued working on his mental health and has used his experiences to help others facing similar struggles.
“Today, Gab is doing extremely well and he’s become a spokesperson actually for people who are going through a mental health issue,” he ended.
For anyone experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of self-harm, seeking immediate support from a trusted person or qualified mental health professional is important.
