Award-winning journalist Kara David recently welcomed five Project Malasakit scholars to Manila for a special reunion and mentoring workshop, allowing them to finally meet her and one another in person.

In a Facebook post, Kara shared how meaningful the gathering was, particularly because she had not personally met many of her scholars before.
“A special week with my scholars.”
“Marami kaming scholars na hindi ko pa nakikita nang personal. Nakakausap ko lang sila sa telepono or online. Kaya nagdesisyon kaming dalhin sa Maynila ang ilan sa aming scholar na malapit nang magtapos ng kolehiyo.”

The scholars came from Bicol, Batangas, Cavite, Romblon and Marawi. Kara said they quickly formed a bond despite meeting for the first time.
“May nanggaling ng Bicol, Batangas, Cavite , Romblon at Marawi. The scholars bonded really well kahit first time nilang magkita at magkakilala.”
Among those who attended were Omnia Ebrahim from Marawi and Dizza from Romblon.
Omnia became a Project Malasakit scholar in 2016 and recently traveled from Marawi to Manila for the first time. Kara personally welcomed her at the airport. She is now pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree in Marawi.
Dizza first met Kara in 2015 in a remote community on Sibuyan Island, Romblon. Orphaned at 12, she had worked in the forest to help support her two younger brothers. Her story was later featured in the i-Witness documentary “Batang Balau.”
Now a third-year BS Marketing student, Dizza traveled for 24 hours by boat from Sibuyan Island to Manila to attend the reunion.
Kara also acknowledged the people who helped make the gathering possible.

She ended her message by thanking the five scholars who traveled from their respective provinces.
“Higit sa lahat, thank you Ekang, Omnia, Dizza, Julia at Benjo for traveling all the way from the provinces for this special reunion 🩷”
The reunion gave Kara a chance to personally mentor her scholars while celebrating their progress as they move closer to finishing college.
Kara David is a Peabody Award-winning Filipino broadcast journalist, television host, and educator known for her investigative documentaries on GMA Network shows like i-Witness and Pinas Sarap. She is also an academic administrator and professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman, as well as the founder of Project Malasakit, a non-profit foundation supporting underprivileged children.
In another report, Kara David reunited with Lilian, whom she first encountered as a three-year-old child in 2007. Now known as Ekang, Lilian recently reached another major milestone by graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. Through Kara’s Project Malasakit, Lilian was given the opportunity to become a scholar and pursue her education. Kara also provided updates about Lilian’s family and expressed how proud she was of the young woman she has become.
Meanwhile, Kara David finally got the chance to interview her longtime idol, Filipino rapper Gloc-9. The Kapuso journalist admitted that she felt nervous during their encounter because of her admiration for the celebrated artist. Her genuine fan-girl reaction caught the attention of netizens, who praised Kara for showing an authentic side of herself while meeting someone she has long looked up to. Their much-anticipated interview is set to be released through the GMA Public Affairs podcast “I-Listen.”
