“For me, I have the privilege to select the brands that I'm going to work with during Pride Month kasi I want to work with brands na aligned sa principles ko na hindi lang every Pride month nagpapakita na meron silang mga efforts even before or after Pride month,” she said.
Marina also criticized brands that only collaborate with q*eer personalities to benefit from “pink money.”
“Pero marami talagang mga performative na mga content... just to get that pink money. And I feel like up until now meron pa rin. For me yun yung one of the biggest and most obvious na form of performative support to the q*eer community.”
She added that companies should also create policies, benefits, and opportunities that genuinely support q*eer employees.
Sassa Gurl echoed the sentiment and said intention matters.
“Actually ang gusto ko lang namang i-pinpoint dito is whenever an institution, a brand or anything performs for pride... dahil gusto mong kumita or gusto mong magkaroon ng engagement. That's so performative.”
She stressed the importance of understanding the struggles faced by q*eer people.
“Kailangan mong malaman kung anong pinaglalaban namin. Kailangan mong malaman kung ano yung struggles namin,” she emphasized.
Sassa also warned against performative allyship driven by selfish motives and urged people to be more careful about whom they support.
“Maging mapagmatyag na din tayo sa mga papasikatin natin,” she said.
Marina added that q*eer identities are lived experiences and should never be treated as costumes or used for personal gain.
“Itong pagiging flamboyant namin hindi siya costume eh. Lived experience siya and that should not be mocked. That shouldn't be used for something to gain something.”
Marina Summers is an internationally acclaimed Filipino drag queen, recording artist, and performer who gained widespread recognition as the runner-up on the first season of Drag Race Philippines and a top finalist on RuPaul's Drag Race: UK vs. The World. Celebrated for her exceptional dancing skills and representation of Filipino culture, she recently made history as the first transgender woman to host the grand coronation night of the Miss Universe Philippines pageant.
In another report, Marina Summers addressed the wave of hateful and transphobic comments she received following her hosting stint at Miss Universe Philippines 2026. The drag superstar also came to the defense of fellow transwoman Angel Galang, who faced online harassment despite their previous disagreement. Marina stressed that criticism should never justify hate, disrespect, or threats against anyone.
