Universidad de Manila (UdM) has launched an investigation into one of its faculty members following allegations of discriminatory remarks directed at TV and social media personality Awra Briguela, Balita reported.

According to a report by the Manila Bulletin published on Wednesday, May 27, UdM President Felma Carlos-Tria confirmed that the university administration, together with its Gender and Development (GAD) Office, is already handling the matter.

“As an academic institution, the University does not condone behavior or expressions that may be perceived as discriminatory, demeaning, or harmful to any individual,” says Tria.

She also stressed that while the investigation is ongoing, the university remains committed to maintaining a safe and inclusive environment for everyone regardless of gender identity, gender expression, or s3xual orientation.

The faculty member involved has reportedly submitted a formal explanation in response to the university’s notice regarding the incident.

The controversy began after Awra publicly criticized the professor over an alleged comment that referred to the celebrity as “babaeng may burat” in a public post. The remark quickly sparked discussions online, with many netizens condemning the statement and expressing support for Awra.

Following the incident, Awra revealed that a formal complaint against the professor is being considered. The actor and social media personality also shared plans to gather statements from other individuals who may have allegedly experienced inappropriate treatment from the same faculty member.

The issue has since fueled wider conversations online about respect, inclusivity, and accountability within educational institutions.
