In response to the growing conversation, Pia used her Facebook post to highlight her belief that nationality and identity cannot be reduced to physical appearance or birthplace.
“I have always believed that identity isn’t measured by where you were born, how you look, or how others see you,” Pia said in her statement.
She further explained that identity is something deeper, shaped by personal values and one’s connection to their heritage.
“It’s shaped by the values you carry, the roots you honor, the love you have for where you come from, and the pride you feel whenever you see our flag represented anywhere in the world,” she added.
Pia also emphasized that there is no single definition of what it means to be Filipino, underscoring the diversity of experiences among Filipinos around the world.
“There is no single way to be Filipino. We each carry that connection in our own way…through our experiences, our families, and the values that bring us home,” she said.
As she closed her message, Pia expressed gratitude for being able to celebrate Independence Day while reflecting on her own identity.
“Today, I’m celebrating that connection and everything it means to me. I hope you are too,” she wrote.
She ended her statement with great love for the Philippines saying:
“Proud to be Filipino. Always.”
