The controversy erupted after a comment Espiritu posted on Instagram gained attention online. The Filipino-American pageant titleholder was responding to a discussion involving fellow Filipino-American model and pageant winner Jether Palomo.

Palomo, who represented the Philippines in several pageants, became part of an online conversation about language and cultural identity. During the exchange, a netizen pointed out that despite representing the Philippines, some contestants were unable to sing in Tagalog.

The discussion intensified when another user commented that those who could not fully represent the country’s culture should instead represent their own nation.

Espiritu then replied, “Tell that to all the front runners for the Philippines. This country wouldn’t have a chance on the national stage without us halfies.”

The statement quickly spread online and triggered strong reactions from netizens who felt that it undermined the accomplishments of full-blooded Filipinos who have successfully represented the country on the international stage.

Among those who publicly criticized the remark was Miss Universe Philippines 2024 first runner-up Stacey Gabriel.

“Disgraceful. You either embrace your Filipino heritage fully when you represent us or you don’t at all. This term 'halfies' is a destructive, racially-motivated word designed to needlessly segregate us,” she said.

Fashion designer Michael Cinco also weighed in on the issue.

“The nerve of these ordinary-looking guys acting superior when they don’t even look like they have any foreign ancestry... They only come to the Philippines to build a career and gain followers...DUHHH...” he wrote.

As criticism continued to mount, Espiritu released a statement through his Instagram Story, acknowledging that his comment was made impulsively and recognizing why many people found it offensive.

“I responded impulsively and made a remark that came across as disrespectful to many Filipinos. That was not my intention, but I understand why people were upset, and I deleted the comment shortly after,” he said.

Espiritu also stressed his pride in representing the country.

“I am proud to represent the Philippines and proud of my Filipino heritage.”
He added, “The last thing I would ever want is to diminish the accomplishments of Filipinos, whether they are full Filipino, mixed Filipino, or anyone who has had the honor of carrying our flag on the international stage.”

The pageant titleholder further apologized to those offended by his words.

“For anyone who was offended by my words, I sincerely apologize.”

He also appealed to the public not to direct their anger toward the businesses, partners, staff members, and communities associated with him, emphasizing that they had no involvement in the controversy.

Espiritu concluded his statement by thanking those who called him out and said the experience would serve as a lesson moving forward.
