The actor-director opened up about the emotional experience during her guest appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Tuesday, July 6, where she recalled visiting Rene's wake and later accompanying his family to Aurora, where the tragic incident took place.
Rene Baterbonia and his teammate, Divine Adili, both passed away during a training exercise in Dipaculao, Aurora. Their deaths drew widespread sympathy and prompted many public figures to express their condolences.
According to BB, it was her brother, Senator Robin Padilla, who first told her about Rene's family after he visited the wake shortly after the athlete's passing.

“Kasi si Robin, nagpunta doon siguro two days pa lang na nandu'n si Bobet (Rene), nagpunta na siya doon sa wake. And then, ikinukwento niya sa akin na talagang awang-awa siya doon sa pamilya, plus the fact na it's a shattered dream, e. 'Alam mo, napakalaki ng potensyal ng bata.”
After hearing Robin's account, BB decided to join him in paying her respects to the grieving family.
“Kasi gusto kong makiramay talaga kasi naiintindihan ko 'yung sakit nu'ng nawala du'n sa pamilya, du'n sa ina.”
BB said embracing Rene's parents made her realize the depth of their sorrow. She admitted she could not imagine experiencing such a heartbreaking loss herself and shared that her bond with the family started from that moment.
She also volunteered to accompany the parents to Aurora, where the accident happened, to provide emotional support as they visited the place where Rene lost his life.
Recalling the emotional visit, BB described a moment that left a lasting impression on her.
“Gusto nila magpaalam and gusto nila makita what happened. And you know ang medyo nakakakilabot is nu'ng nandu'n na kami and then dala-dala nila 'yung mga flowers, tapos binaba 'yung flowers du'n sa dalampasigan, tapos 'yung tubig, hindi naman umaabot kasi nilagay nila du'n sa medyo hindi inaabot ng tubig.”
She continued by sharing what happened as Rene's mother spoke to her son.
“But when the mom started saying something and talking to Bobet, alam mo, biglang [tumaas] 'yung tubig du'n sa mga flowers, parang nagparamdam talaga, kinuha 'yung [mga bulaklak].”
Although BB believes Rene's parents have slowly become stronger over time, she acknowledged that the pain of losing their son will always remain.
“I think grief will be forever, it's just a matter of getting used to it. It will never go away. You just get used to it. Especially so Bobet is sucha a good -- kinukwento kasi sa 'kin, he's such a good son.”

In another report, BB Gandanghari shared that they are open to returning to the Philippine entertainment industry and taking on local projects once again. The actor-director said they hope to reunite with GMA Network, citing the quality of its productions. Beyond acting, BB revealed plans to direct, produce, and develop original concepts for future projects. One of the film ideas is already being discussed with a producer while efforts to secure funding are underway.
Meanwhile, BB Gandanghari appealed to Senator Kiko Pangilinan as discussions continue over the proposal to lower the age of criminal responsibility. BB recalled campaigning for Kiko in the past because of admiration for Sharon Cuneta, but said those views have since changed. The actor-director defended the proposal being pushed by sibling Senator Robin Padilla and urged lawmakers to carefully consider both the welfare of children and the concerns of parents while deliberating on the measure.
