Actor Janus del Prado received a threatening message after his joke about singer and lawyer Jimmy Bondoc sparked backlash online.

Janus had posted a message intended for people preparing to take the Bar Examinations, telling them not to be nervous. He then added a punchline involving Bondoc, who passed the Bar Exams.

“Wag kayo kabahan sa Bar Exams. Si Jimmy Bondoc nga nakapasa eh,” Janus said in his post.

The remark quickly drew mixed reactions from social media users, with some criticizing the actor for making Bondoc the subject of the joke.

According to an article by Bandera.inquirer.net, the backlash escalated when Janus shared a message from what he described as a dummy account. The message contained a threat challenging him to a confrontation.

“Ano gusto mo, gyera ng bala? Sabihin mo puntahan kami. Tapang mo, boy,” the message sent to Janus read.

Rather than backing down, Janus answered his critics with his own brand of sarcasm. He even told those challenging him to make sure they would bring a gun, not merely bullets.

The actor also addressed lawyers who criticized his post, wondering whether his joke had struck a sensitive nerve among them.

“Dami nagalit na ibang ‘lawyers.’ Did I hit a nerve?” Janus wrote in another post.

Janus also pushed back against accusations that he was simply seeking attention online because he was no longer active in showbiz. He pointed out that some of those criticizing him appeared to spend considerable time on social media themselves.

“Eh, nasaan na ba kayo ngayon? ’Di ba mas madalas pa kayo sa SocMed kaysa sa courtroom?” he said.

Beyond the specific controversy, Janus questioned what he viewed as a double standard among some members of the legal profession. He argued that people can freely criticize others online but may object when they themselves become the subject of jokes or criticism.

At the same time, Janus acknowledged that some of his lawyer friends understood the humor behind his post, although some admitted that the joke could be painful because of how it was delivered.

“Kasi kahit gets mo o hindi, jokes are jokes, kahit may halo pang criticism ’yan."

He further emphasized that the joke was not specifically directed at the people who reacted negatively to it.

“Especially when the joke isn’t even targeted at you,” Janus said.

The controversy has since placed renewed attention on the boundaries between online humor, criticism and personal attacks, particularly when public figures become the subject of jokes on social media.

Janus del Prado is a veteran Filipino actor and comedian, known for his work as a former Star Magic talent and his memorable roles in classic hit films such as One More Chance.

Jimmy Bondoc is a Filipino musician, lawyer, and former government official, best known for his hit OPM acoustic song "Let Me Be The One" and his appointment as an executive at PAGCOR.

In another report, Janus del Prado shared his strong sentiments about some UP scholars in a Facebook post, criticizing what he perceived as arrogance and repeated complaints. The actor made it clear that he understands the provisions of the Free Tuition Law, or Republic Act No. 10931, including its eligibility requirements. However, Janus emphasized that education remains supported by taxpayers, whether the funding comes through scholarships or other forms of government assistance. He also revealed that he has been working since he was just five years old and never had the opportunity to take the UPCAT.
