Janus del Prado openly shared his thoughts regarding some University of the Philippines (UP) scholars and students, sparking online discussion about education, privilege, and social responsibility.

The actor’s remarks were connected to ongoing conversations following a violent encounter in Taboso, Negros Occidental that resulted in the deaths of 19 individuals, including student leader Alyssa Alano from UP.

On his Facebook post, Janus addressed criticisms from netizens who questioned his knowledge about the UP Free Tuition Law and his right to speak on the matter.

He said, “Sa mga nagsasabi sa akin na di ako updated sa UP Free Tuition law Republic Act No. 10931 nu’ng 2017, Yes, I am fully aware of that.”

He added that the law still comes with conditions, explaining:

“But you still have to be eligible for that. Meron pa ring qualifications. There are still parameters. So hindi pa rin lahat 100% free ang tuition. Madami pa rin nagbabayad ng full tuition or nag-aapply for discounts.”

Janus also pointed out his belief about public funding in education, saying:

“Wag kayo masyado mayabang. Kasi pera ng taumbayan ang nagpapaaral at nagpaaral sa inyo. Through full scholarship man, free tuition law or discounted. Pera pa rin ng mga taxpayers yan.”

He emphasized the value of humility in public discourse, adding:

“Konting utang na loob naman sa taumbayan lalo na sa mga working class. Kaltas pa rin sa sweldo nila yan.”

The actor also shared a personal detail about his upbringing, stating:

“Yes, unfortunately I didn’t even have the chance to take the UPCAT because i’ve been working since I was 5 years old.”

Janus ended his message by urging students to contribute positively to society and avoid arrogance, stressing responsibility alongside education and privilege.
