The heartbreaking scene, captured in viral videos, drew public sympathy and outrage.
Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon earlier stated that initial CCTV footage suggests the crash appeared unintentional.
The SUV, driven by 47-year-old Leo Gonzales, reportedly surged forward after he panicked when another vehicle crossed his path, mistakenly stepping on the accelerator instead of the brake.
In a compassionate response to the tragedy, Ramon Ang, president of AIA Infra Corp. (NNIC), has pledged to shoulder the medical expenses of the injured victims.
Ang’s company oversees the operations of the NAIA Terminal 1 through a consortium agreement.
As investigations continue, authorities are working to clarify the full circumstances behind the fatal crash.
The driver remains in custody, and legal proceedings are expected to follow.
The incident has prompted calls for stronger safety measures in airport drop-off zones to prevent similar tragedies.
