- Batangas Rep. Vilma Santos has filed a bill which aims to increase the allowance of public school teachers
- The bill seeks to increase the subsidy of teachers from P3,500 to P10,000
- Santos also mentioned that teachers should be given “priority attention”
Batangas Representative Vilma Santos has recently filed a bill seeking to raise the cash allowance given to public school teachers for their teaching supplies.
KAMI learned that Santos wants to raise the annual cash allowance to P10,000 so that it could cover the teaching supplies like chalks, erasers, forms, and other teaching materials.
As reported by GMA News Online (author Erwin Colcol), the current subsidy given to teachers is P3,500.
Under House Bill 3449, the P3,500 annual allowance will be coming from the current budget of DepEd, and the remaining P6,500 will be allocated from the savings of the department.

According to Santos, the current salaries of the teachers are not enough to cover their workload, as well as the supplies they have to buy from their own pockets.
"In spite of the increasing budget allocation that the Department of Education (DepEd) enjoys, the cash allowance they provide to teachers just translates to a P16-subsidy per day, which is relatively insufficient in assisting classroom teachers to deliver informative lectures and stimulating class discussions to the country's 22.1 million public schools," Santos explained.
She also mentioned that the teachers should be given “priority attention” as they are the contributors that develop the youth.
"Teachers should be given priority attention, they being contributors to the mental development and the formation of moral and ethical values of our youth. With this additional allowance, the burden on public school teachers will be alleviated and their working conditions will certainly improve,” she said.
In a previous report by KAMI, Santos gave a heartwarming message to her son Luis Manzano and his girlfriend Jessy Mendiola for their 3rd anniversary.
Vilma Santos-Recto is a well-known actress and politician. She became popular as the “Star for All Seasons.” She ran for office in Lipa, Batangas in 1998 and became the first-ever female mayor of the city.
