Ateneo de Manila University has issued a fresh statement following the recommendation of the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to file criminal charges against several individuals in connection with the deaths of Blue Eagles basketball players Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

In a memorandum released by University President Fr. Roberto C. Yap, SJ, the university reiterated its commitment to supporting members of the Ateneo community who have been affected by the CIDG’s recommendation while emphasizing the importance of respecting the country’s legal process.

According to the university, Fr. Yap reaffirmed that Ateneo will continue to provide assistance to those involved as they exercise their legal rights.

“The University has been informed that criminal charges were recommended to be filed against several members of our community.

“The University respects the legal process and will continue to cooperate with the authorities. It will provide whatever assistance and support to these persons as they exercise their rights and defend themselves throughout the process.”

Fr. Yap also appealed to the Ateneo community to allow the legal proceedings to unfold without prejudice or public speculation.

“I ask every member of the Ateneo community to allow the legal process to proceed free from speculation, prejudice, or trial by publicity. Our justice system demands that facts be tested, evidence be weighed fairly, and the rights of all parties be respected.”

The university president likewise acknowledged that the Ateneo community continues to mourn the loss of the two student-athletes, whose deaths deeply affected the university and the Philippine sports community.

“As we continue to grieve the tragic loss of ♱Rene Baterbonia and ♱Divine Adili, let us remain united in prayer for their families, for those who now face these legal proceedings, and for our entire University community. May we all be guided by truth, justice, compassion, and hope in the days ahead.”

The memorandum comes as investigations into the June 8 tragedy continue.

Rene Baterbonia, 19, and Divine Adili, 21, died after they were swept away by strong waves and a powerful rip current during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

Since the incident, multiple government agencies and organizations have conducted separate investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.

The latest statement from Ateneo underscores the university’s position of cooperating fully with authorities while also ensuring that members of its community receive appropriate support as legal proceedings move forward.

At the same time, the university urged everyone to uphold fairness and due process by allowing investigators and the courts to determine the facts based on evidence rather than speculation.

Tiu offered prayers for the bereaved families, teammates, coaches, and everyone affected by the tragedy while encouraging unity and mutual support as the university continues to heal from the devastating loss.

Previously, Rene Baterbonia Sr. spent his first Father’s Day grieving the absence of his son, basketball standout Bobet Baterbonia. The grieving father reflected on the pain of celebrating the occasion without his child and recalled personally mentoring and training Bobet throughout his basketball journey from an early age. Despite carrying immense sorrow, he encouraged fellow parents to remain closely involved in supporting and guiding their children’s dreams and aspirations.
