In the Philippines, a Barangay Kagawad, also known as a Barangay Councilor, is an elected official who serves as a member of the Sangguniang Barangay or Barangay Council, which is the governing body of a barangay—the smallest unit of government in the country.
Barangay Kagawads assist the Barangay Captain in managing the affairs of the community. They help create and implement local ordinances and resolutions that address the needs of the residents.
Kagawads also play a role in maintaining peace and order by coordinating with law enforcement or barangay tanods, and they support programs related to health, sanitation, education, and disaster response.
Additionally, each kagawad often heads specific committees, such as those for youth, sports, environment, or livelihood, and they help mediate disputes and respond to concerns raised by community members.
Overall, they are essential in ensuring that services and assistance reach the grassroots level of society.
