During their appearance on Fast Talk with Boy Abunda on Tuesday, October 13, the two actresses discussed how their Cebuano roots have shaped their experiences and why they believe Bisaya talent deserves to be recognized beyond regional labels.

Shuvee, who stars in Red Crown, recalled being associated with domestic helper roles because of the stereotype that provincial women are suited for such characters.

The actress explained that she had to challenge herself and push beyond her perceived limitations to demonstrate her range as a performer. She emphasized that Bisaya artists have plenty to offer and should not be confined to stereotypical portrayals.

“I've had to really, really push my limits para ipakita sa kanila na 'Hindi, hindi, ang mga Bisaya, mga talentado kami, marami kaming pinapatunayan,'” Shuvee added.

AZ, meanwhile, said she does not necessarily consider every situation involving regional identity a stereotype, especially when the observations are accurate. However, she expressed discomfort with the repeated comments she receives about her Tagalog-speaking ability.

“Lagi kasing sinasabi sa 'kin, 'yung Tagalog ko. Mahirap kaming mag-Tagalog. Like sinasabi nila, 'Taga-Cebu ka, 'no? Kaya pala ganyan ang Tagalog mo,'” AZ pointed out.

Her experience highlights another aspect of the issue: how a person's regional background can become the basis for assumptions about their speech and abilities.

During the discussion, host Boy Abunda also pointed out that Cebu has produced many talented singers and actors. AZ attributed this to the people and environment that shape Cebuanos, particularly their courage and strong sense of community.

“I would say na it's because of the people we're surrounded with kasi grabe 'yung tapang, 'yung pagmamahal ng mga Cebuanos,” AZ further explained.

Shuvee agreed with AZ's sentiments and highlighted the distinct beauty she sees in Cebuana women, particularly their confidence and pride in their heritage.

“I would say iba talaga ang Cebuano at saka iba talaga ang ganda ng mga Cebuana. Very authentic, beautiful in a way na proud sila sa roots nila,” she said.

Through their candid remarks, the actresses underscored the importance of recognizing individual talent rather than allowing regional stereotypes to define a person's opportunities or capabilities. Their comments also reflected their shared pride in their Bisaya identity and their determination to represent their roots with confidence.

Shuvee Etrata and AZ Martinez are Filipino actresses, models, and former beauty queens from Cebu who originally met on the pageant circuit before signing with GMA's Sparkle talent agency. After gaining broader recognition as housemates on Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Collab Edition, the close friends and former roommates continue to collaborate on television and film projects, including the pageant-themed movie Red Crown.
