Actress and comedian Pokwang opened up about one of the most painful experiences of her life as a mother—the death of her eldest son, Shin, while she was working abroad.

During a recent guesting on i-Listen, Pokwang recalled how she had to leave her children in the Philippines under the care of her mother and sibling whenever she returned to Japan for work. She later went to Abu Dhabi in 1998 to earn money for her family.
Shin was only six years old when he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Pokwang said she had already noticed something unusual about her son before leaving the Philippines in June that year.
“June kasi ako nu’ng umalis. Pero nakita na, August na nakita na mayroon siyang brain tumor. Pero bago ako umalis noong June, sabi ko bakit parang iba na 'yung lakad niya. Tapos bumabagsak 'yung katawan niya,” she recalled.

Her mother also noticed alarming symptoms, including vomiting and difficulty walking.
“Tapos sabi ng nanay ko, ‘pag daw nagvo-vomit siya, 'yung pasirit. Tapos, hindi niya makontrol 'yung lakad niya,” she added.
While Pokwang remained in Abu Dhabi, her family took Shin to doctors in the Philippines. A CT scan eventually revealed that the boy had a malignant congenital condition.
“Doon nakita, malignant na… Congenital. Congenital 'yung bata. Pinanganak siyang meron,” she said.
Pokwang explained that she chose to continue working because she needed money for her son's treatment.
“No. Kasi sabi ko, kung uuwi ako, walang pampagamot 'yung bata. Kailangan ko mag-ipon ng pampagamot,” she explained.
Filipino friends in Abu Dhabi eventually helped her raise funds. However, by the time she was able to send money home, Shin's condition had already deteriorated. He needed a procedure to remove fluid from his brain, but his body could no longer endure the process.
“So, nagtulong-tulong 'yung mga Pilipinong mga kakilala ko doon. Pero nu’ng pinadala ko 'yung pera, wala na eh. Bumigay na 'yung bata. Hindi na niya kinaya. ‘Yung proseso pa lang,” she said.
Shin died in September, but Pokwang could not immediately return to the Philippines because she had no money for the trip and was still bound by her work contract.
“Namatay siya. Wala ako sa tabi niya,” she recalled that heartbreaking moment.
What remained particularly painful for Pokwang was learning that Shin kept looking for her while he was confined in the hospital.
"Ang pinakakumurot talaga sa akin yung nasa ospital siya na, ‘Si mama ba 'yan? Si mama na…’ Every time na bubukas ang pinto. Tinatanong niya kung si mama na ‘yan [kung umuwi na siya]. Tinatawag niya ako. Siyempre tinatawag niya ako. Parang, ‘Si mama ko na ba ‘yan? Everytime na may dadalaw sa kaniya,” she said emotionally.
She eventually returned to the Philippines in December, months after her son's death.
“Wala. Naipampalibing na lang ng bata 'yung napadala kong pera. December na ako nakauwi,” she continued.
The experience changed Pokwang's outlook on working overseas. With another daughter, Mae, to care for, she decided to stop pursuing work abroad and instead build a life for her family in the Philippines.
“Ayoko nang bumiyahe. Ayoko nang magtrabaho sa abroad. Kasi meron pa akong isang babae na anak, si Mae. Sabi ko, try ko makipagsapalaran dito sa Pilipinas,” she finally said.
Pokwang, born Marietta Subong, is a multi-awarded Filipino comedian, actress, and television host who rose to fame after winning the reality talent search Clown in a Million in 2004. Renowned for her vibrant personality and versatility, she has starred in numerous hit sitcoms, dramas, and blockbuster films, earning accolades such as the Dolphy King of Comedy Award.
In another report, Pokwang openly addressed the criticism she has received over her political views during her appearance on “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda.” The actress-comedian explained that she continues to speak about political matters because she considers it her right as a Filipino citizen and taxpayer to express her opinions. Pokwang said she hopes her views can contribute to a better future for the next generation despite the backlash she receives online. She also revealed that the criticism from netizens no longer affects her the way it once did.
Meanwhile, Pokwang entertained viewers with her witty response when Boy Abunda asked whether she had already closed her heart to men. While talking about the role of men in her idea of happiness, the comedienne identified her father as the most important man in her life. When Boy followed up by asking if she was still open to romance, Pokwang responded with another humorous remark. Her playful answers became one of the memorable parts of the interview and offered a glimpse into her current perspective on love.
