Speaking out decades after his sudden disappearance from the Philippine entertainment scene, the celebrated actor detailed the severe emotional toll that forced him to walk away from immense wealth and fame to reclaim his own identity.
During a recent interview on Susan Enriquez's vlog "Kay Susan Tayo!", Jao discussed the grueling reality of his nonstop schedule at the height of his popularity.
“I was young then. I knew I had money coming in. money, fame, power. Tsaka nagtatrabaho ako doon 24/7 almost. For seven years sabihin na natin, from 1993 to 1999. Tita napagod ako noon,” he confessed.

The relentless demands of his career were compounded by a profound personal loss. As detailed in a report by GMA News, the actor disclosed that a highly painful separation from a non-showbiz girlfriend sent him spiraling into a deep emotional void.
“Pero I had a girlfriend at that time outside showbiz. And I know 'yung breakup na 'yun nasobrahan, na-inlove ako doon sa babaeng 'yun. 'Yung breakup na ‘yun, ang rason kung bakit I got into a depression,” he recalled.
Jao explained that he simply could not handle the heartache while maintaining his demanding public persona. “I was at the peak of my career. I couldn't handle the heartache. ‘Yun ang dahilan kung bakit umalis din ako ng showbiz. And I said, I'd like to take a break. Actually not take a break, but I said, I'm gonna leave showbiz.”
The combination of a broken heart and immense professional pressure created an unbearable environment for the young star.
Jao felt entirely trapped by the heavy expectations of his producers, managers, and fans. “It was because probably of mix na eh. pagod saka heartbreak. So, parang na-burnout ako Tita,” he explained.

Pero for seven years, ito 'yung takbo ng buhay mo na parang robot. Sunod ka lang, sunod. Sabi ko sa sarili ko, gusto ko mabalik 'yung ano naman ang gusto ko. Burned out, basically. And I got depressed after that.”
Stepping away from the camera turned out to be a massive turning point for the former teen star. Away from the flashing lights, Jao successfully finished his college degree and eventually found his lifelong partner, Cecil Garcia, who happened to be his neighbor when he returned to the Philippines.

“Dito ko nahanap ang Panginoon. Siya nang gumagabay sa akin, sa pamilya ko. At nandito ako ngayon para bumalik.” Fully recharged and grounded, he is now set to make a television comeback in the upcoming Kapuso action drama series “Hari ng Tondo.”
