Actor and Nueva Ecija provincial board member Jason Abalos publicly expressed his frustration over the ongoing controversy surrounding a plunder case involving former House Speaker Martin Romualdez.

In a Facebook post on September 14, Abalos questioned the doctors involved in the medical assessments of a person facing a billion-peso plunder case. Although he did not mention any name, his remarks were reported in the context of Romualdez’s recent hospitalization and subsequent transfer to detention.
Abalos wrote, “Don sa mga doctor na nang iimbento ng sakit para sa may plunder case, ikina proud kaya ng pamilya niyo yan?”
He added, “Bilyong piso ang pinag uusapang kaso niyan, nakakahiya naman don sa nakulong na nagnakaw ng sardinas para napakain ang pamilya.”

Abalos’ comments came as Romualdez was facing legal proceedings over a plunder complaint involving alleged anomalies in government flood control projects. The case, filed by the Office of the Ombudsman, involves an alleged ₱7.4 billion in ill-gotten wealth. The accusations remain allegations, and the filing of a case does not establish guilt.

Romualdez was served an arrest warrant on September 7 while confined at Cardinal Santos Medical Center. Authorities said he had been hospitalized after experiencing a cardiovascular event, unstable blood pressure and an anxiety attack.
He was later transferred to the Philippine General Hospital for an independent medical assessment ordered by the Sandiganbayan. PGH doctors subsequently assessed that he was stable and did not require special medical monitoring, according to the court proceedings.
During a Sandiganbayan hearing, Romualdez’s psychiatrist also testified that he had been diagnosed with depressive disorder with anxiety.
On September 14, the Sandiganbayan Third Division ordered Romualdez’s transfer from PGH to the Quezon City Jail Male Dormitory in Payatas after receiving the hospital’s medical assessment.
The developments surrounding Romualdez’s medical condition and detention have drawn public attention, with Abalos becoming one of the personalities to publicly comment on the issue.
Romualdez faces the plunder case together with former Ako Bicol party-list lawmaker Zaldy Co and two other co-accused in connection with alleged irregularities involving flood control and other government infrastructure projects. The accused are entitled to due process, and the allegations remain subject to court proceedings.

Alden’s repost came as legal proceedings against Romualdez continued.
Meanwhile, Senator Chiz Escudero denied allegations that he received four suitcases containing cash from an associate of Zaldy Co. Escudero described the accusations as part of political mudslinging and pointed to his long-standing conflict with Co as a reason he considered the alleged transaction impossible. He also noted that the people making the allegations reportedly gave an incorrect address for him. Despite the error, Chiz said he had no intention of correcting the address for them.
