The repost, shared through Alden’s Instagram Stories, focused on what it portrayed as a stark difference in the treatment of people facing very different circumstances. The comparison showed Romualdez’s mugshot after he was arrested while confined at a hospital alongside an image of an elderly man who was reportedly jailed after begging on the streets to provide food for his grandchild.

The social media post comes shortly after Romualdez was arrested on Monday, September 7, following the filing of a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan. According to reports, the former Speaker and incumbent Leyte representative was served an arrest warrant at Cardinal Santos Medical Center in San Juan City, where he had been confined.

The arrest followed allegations that Romualdez, former Ako Bicol Rep. Elizaldy “Zaldy” Co and other individuals received at least ₱7.4 billion in commissions, kickbacks and other financial benefits connected to government-funded flood control, infrastructure and other projects between 2022 and 2025.

Romualdez was not in a conventional detention facility when authorities served the warrant. Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said the former Speaker had been brought to Cardinal Santos Medical Center after experiencing what authorities described as a cardiovascular event, unstable blood pressure and an anxiety attack. The authorities also carried out the booking procedure inside the hospital room. Reports said Romualdez underwent fingerprinting while an orange shirt identifying persons deprived of liberty was placed across his chest during the process.

The Philippine National Police later released Romualdez’s mugshot following his arrest and booking at the hospital. Romualdez has denied the allegations against him.
