Romnick Sarmenta has renewed his opposition to the proposed Pax Silica project in a video he posted on X, raising questions about its possible benefits for the Philippines and its people.

Romnick pointed out the country’s limited land area, fragmented geography, and dense population as he questioned why the Philippines was being considered as the site of the proposed development. He also wondered why the project could not be built in the countries of its foreign proponents, where larger areas of land may be available.

“Sabi nila, ang bansang Pilipinas ay maliit, masikip, watak-watak na mga isla, at overpopulated. So ang tanong ko, bakit dito itatayo ‘yong Pax Silica na data centers?”

He also questioned whether the project would create meaningful opportunities for Filipinos or mainly leave them with labor-intensive positions while foreign companies benefit from Philippine resources. Romnick noted that qualified Filipino workers could potentially be given employment opportunities even if similar facilities were constructed outside the country.

He admitted that there were still aspects of the proposal he needed to study and understand, but remained concerned about how its benefits would be distributed.

“Alangan naman construction worker lang tayo tapos iba ‘yong makikinabang. Ganoon ba ‘yong usapan? Hindi ko alam. Marami akong hindi alam, marami pa akong dapat na matutunan at pag-aralan.”

Romnick also drew attention to possible effects on the environment and communities, particularly the use of natural resources and land. He raised concerns about forests, agricultural areas, farmers, and Indigenous peoples potentially being affected by the development.

He questioned whether the project could genuinely be considered beneficial if Philippine resources and land were used at the expense of communities.

Before winning a congressional seat under Akbayan, Diokno had made unsuccessful Senate bids in 2019 and 2022.

Years earlier, Romnick addressed his approach to dealing with negativity on social media. In a post, he clarified that he blocks certain people not simply because their comments offend him, but because he does not want negativity, falsehoods, or harsh remarks occupying his online space. He said many people visit his social media platforms and that he wanted to keep them clean, adding that he would not allow “Memas,” trolls, and “Maritess” to remain in his space.
