Gloc-9 opened up about the challenges he faces when performing his socially conscious song “Upuan,” revealing that there have been events where he was instructed not to sing it.

During his interview with Kara David on “i-Listen,” Gloc-9 admitted that he sometimes questions whether he is still worthy of performing his own songs after encountering people who object to them. He recalled being told directly not to perform “Upuan” at certain shows.

“And sometimes, I ask myself if I'm still worthy of my song. Minsan pinipigilan akong kantahin ‘yan sa show. Bawal daw. ‘Huwag mong kakantahin 'yun ah.’”

Gloc-9 also opened up about moments when he feels that he may be taking his own creations for granted. He explained that there are times when he wonders whether choosing not to perform a song because someone told him not to means he is failing to give his creation the meaning it deserves.

“May mga times na I feel, ngayon ko lang yata sasabihin ‘to. Sometimes, I feel nati-take for granted ko 'yung mga creations ko. May mga times na siguro, kung kinanta ko siya, iba 'yung dating. Minsan iniisip ko, kasalanan ko ba 'yun na hindi ko kinanta kasi sinabi sa akin na huwag kong kantahin?”

Despite these concerns, Gloc-9 said his family remains his priority. He explained that he would rather avoid confronting those who object to his songs if doing so could put him at risk of not being able to return home to his child.

“Iniisip ko na lang kasi gusto kong umuwi sa anak ko. Baka kasi ‘pag kinanta ko, hindi ako makauwi sa anak ko.”

The conversation also touched on the message behind “Upuan” and the social issues reflected in the song. Kara expressed her hope that the song could serve as a tool to help people recognize the hardships experienced by Filipinos and become more aware of realities that should not be ignored.

In the same interview, Gloc-9 revealed the story behind “Upuan,” sharing that the song was inspired by his experiences as a nursing student in public hospitals. He recalled witnessing the struggles of patients, including a heartbreaking incident involving a mother who lost her child.
