Gloc-9 opened up about the personal experiences that inspired him to write his socially conscious song “Upuan,” recalling his time as a nursing student assigned to public hospitals and the difficult situations he witnessed among patients.

During his interview on “i-Listen” hosted by Kara David, Gloc-9 shared how his exposure to public hospitals gave him a closer look at the hardships experienced by Filipinos, particularly those living in difficult circumstances.
He recalled that his experience as a nursing student was one of the first times he personally saw how challenging life could be for many people in the country, especially those from marginalized communities.
“Pero dahil din 'yung time na 'yun, 'yun 'yung nag-duty ako sa mga public hospital. It's the first time na hindi madali ang buhay dito sa atin. Lalo-lalo na sa mga nahihirapan, 'yung mga nasa laylayan. Sila 'yung pinakahirap.”

Gloc-9 also expressed gratitude for being able to interact directly with patients while assigned to public hospitals. Unlike his experience in private hospitals, he said his duties in public facilities allowed him to speak with patients and gain a deeper understanding of their circumstances.
One particular incident, however, left a lasting impression on him. Gloc-9 recalled witnessing a mother lose her child right in front of her, a painful scene that showed him the extent of the struggles faced by some families in public hospitals.
“I witnessed a mother na mawalan ng anak sa harapan mo. Wala kang magagawa. Tina-try niya i-convince 'yung sarili niya na hindi totoo. Sa harapan mo, ‘Gising ka na anak. Gising ka na. Uwi na tayo.’”
For Gloc-9, witnessing such a heartbreaking moment became a powerful source of inspiration for his songwriting. He explained that seeing the mother's grief was enough to motivate him to create music that could communicate a message to other people.
“I think para makita mo 'yon, hindi ka na kukulangin pa sa kahit na anong motivation to write songs and makapag-relay ng message sa ibang tao. Doon ko nasulat ang ‘Upuan.’”
The experience also led Gloc-9 to reflect on the treatment of people who struggle financially, particularly when seeking medical care. He pointed out what he described as a lack of sympathy in some situations involving patients who could not afford treatment or access to certain hospitals.
He recalled seeing situations in which people in vulnerable circumstances could be turned away from hospitals because they could not meet the requirements for admission.
“Tayo ay may ospital na nagpapaalis ng isang babaeng lumalabas na 'yung baby sa kaniya at sasabihin mo sa tao na, ‘Hindi kami public hospital, hindi ka puwede dito.’ May mga ganu’n. So you realize na hindi fair. Marami talagang nahihirapan.”
Through “Upuan,” Gloc-9 was able to transform the difficult realities he encountered during his time in public hospitals into a song that carries a message about inequality and the struggles of ordinary Filipinos.
Gloc-9 is a Filipino rapper, songwriter, and recording artist known for his socially conscious music and thought-provoking lyrics. His songs have earned recognition for their meaningful messages, making him one of the prominent figures in the Philippine hip-hop scene.
