Rufo, an alumnus of the university, shared his thoughts during a guest appearance on the entertainment talk show “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” on Wednesday, July 8. He appeared alongside fellow personality Joy Barcoma. During the interview, he addressed the public outrage and the tendency of netizens to place collective blame on the entire student body.
Expressing deep sympathy for the student community, Rufo emphasized that judging an entire group based on the handling of the situation creates an unjust environment of collective guilt.
“I think it's incredibly unfair because naging guilty by association. I guess the way the whole situation was managed, and then naging guilty 'yung mga estudyante—very painful.”

He pointed out that the public fixation on assigning institutional blame and the drawn-out nature of the controversy has completely overshadowed the genuine human grief of the incident.
Rufo continued, “And then it's long-drawn-out process and we're forgetting na the human aspect of this which is the tragedy that happened.”
He then concluded by stating that he could not dive any deeper into the university's specifics at the moment due to an ongoing personal travel requirement.
“So hanggang doon lang muna 'yung sasabihin ko kase kukuha pa po ko ng transcript sa Ateneo para mag-apply sa Japan visa,” he added.
The deaths of Baterbonia and Adili have sparked intense discussion online, with various sectors demanding accountability. However, personalities like Rufo are now urging the public to separate institutional processes from the student body and to keep the focus on the tragedy itself.

As previously reported by KAMI, former Ateneo athlete Gretchen Ho expressed deep grief over the deaths of Ateneo athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili, emphasizing the need for transparency, facts, and accountability in the ongoing investigation. Highlighting that silence fuels speculation, Ho expressed confidence that Ateneo and authorities will take appropriate action.
A campus walkout erupted at Ateneo last June as students demanded justice and corporate accountability for deceased athletes Rene Baterbonia and Divine Adili. The intense demonstration targeted deep-seated systemic safety gaps within the institution, with passionate protesters actively chanting "Ateneo, Do Better" to force a transparent administrative response. This physical mobilization quickly caught widespread attention across various digital networks, where online groups rapidly amplified the footage and magnified the urgent calls for an uncompromised, transparent investigation.
