Former Ateneo student-athlete and broadcaster Gretchen Ho has spoken out following the tragic deaths of two members of the Ateneo Blue Eagles men’s basketball team during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora.

The victims were identified as Rene Baterbonia, 19, and Divine Adili, 21. Their deaths have sent shockwaves through the Ateneo community and the wider Philippine sports world. Baterbonia was regarded as one of the country’s most promising young basketball talents.
In a statement shared online, Ho expressed her sorrow over the tragedy, noting that the incident struck a deeply personal chord because of her own history as an Ateneo athlete.
“As a former student-athlete of Ateneo, this tragedy hits very close to home. It is deeply painful,” she said.

The television personality also acknowledged that many questions remain unanswered regarding the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“There are legitimate questions about what happened, and I trust that the multi-stakeholder body formed by the PSC, together with representatives from the UAAP, SBP, CHED, and NYC, will establish the facts and present them to the public at the appropriate time,” Ho stated.
Her comments come amid growing public interest in understanding the details surrounding the tragedy and the events that led to the deaths of the two athletes.
At the same time, Ho emphasized the importance of allowing those affected by the incident the time and space needed to process their grief.
“Understandably, people are still in a state of shock, and we should allow them this space to grieve and find their footing,” she said.
However, she also cautioned against prolonged silence, warning that a lack of information could encourage speculation and misinformation.
“However, silence will only allow speculation and false narratives to thrive.”
Ho concluded her statement by expressing confidence in Ateneo and the institutions involved in the investigation.
“We trust that the institution we call home will do the right thing.”

The institution also entrusted the two student-athletes to God’s mercy and requested continued prayers from the public as the community copes with the heartbreaking loss.
