According to Manila Bulletin, the resort in Dipaculao, Aurora has been placed under a temporary closure order following the drowning incident involving two Ateneo de Manila University basketball players during a team-building activity on Monday, June 8, 2026.

The closure specifically covers the Hermanos Leisure and Farm Resort after local authorities issued an order for its suspension of operations while a full investigation is ongoing. The directive was issued by Mayor Danilo A. Tolentino as part of efforts to determine what led to the tragic incident and to ensure the safety of both residents and tourists in the area.

An inspection team composed of representatives from the Business Permits and Licensing Office, Municipal Tourism Office, Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, and the Philippine Coast Guard was deployed to assess the resort’s operations and safety measures.

The team conducted a thorough evaluation of compliance with existing regulations governing tourism-related establishments.

Based on initial findings, the resort reportedly failed to comply with several important provisions under Sangguniang Bayan Ordinance No. 2025-12, which focuses on safety standards in beach and tourism areas within Dipaculao.

Authorities emphasized that adherence to these regulations is essential, especially for establishments that host water-related activities.

Officials explained that the temporary closure is part of a broader initiative to strictly enforce local policies and ensure that all tourism establishments maintain proper safety protocols.

The goal is to prevent similar incidents in the future and to strengthen public confidence in recreational sites across the municipality.

Local government representatives also extended their condolences to the families, friends, teammates, and loved ones of the two student-athletes who died in the incident.

They assured the public that accountability and safety improvements will be prioritized moving forward.

Authorities further stated that monitoring efforts and coordination with relevant agencies will be intensified as part of long-term preventive measures. In another report, Vice President Sara Duterte expressed disappointment over what she described as Ateneo de Manila University’s inadequate response following the deaths of two basketball players during a team-building activity. Duterte stressed that the incident involved student-athletes and should not be treated as an ordinary case, emphasizing the need for greater sensitivity. She added that both the families and the school should work together in understanding the full circumstances surrounding what happened.

Meanwhile, Gretchen Ho also criticized Ateneo de Manila University’s response following the deaths of student-athletes Divine Adili and Rene Clert Baterbonia, who both passed away during a team-building activity in Aurora. Her remarks were echoed by several alumni and netizens online, many of whom also expressed disappointment with the school’s official statement and response to the tragedy.
