Six men were arrested in Barangay Bagbag, Novaliches, Quezon City after police allegedly caught them pulling out and loading underground copper cable into a truck.

The incident was featured on GMA’s Unang Balita in a report by James Agustin.

According to police, a concerned citizen alerted authorities after noticing suspicious activity involving the group.

Officers and barangay personnel then went to the area and allegedly saw the men handling the cable and loading it into a vehicle.

“Naaktuhan po nila yung mga suspect na naghahatak at nagkakarga na ng cable wires doon sa loob ng truck,” a police officer said in the report.

Authorities reportedly asked the men to present documents showing that they were authorized to remove or transport the cables.

Police said they failed to show the necessary papers. Some members of the group allegedly tried to run away, but six men were eventually arrested. A closed van believed to have been used by the group was also impounded.

Inside the vehicle were the recovered cable wires, which police said measured about 28 meters and were worth more than ₱239,000.

Authorities also recovered a chain and two metal saws that were allegedly used in the operation. Police said the suspects are residents of Quezon City.

Investigators also described the group as part of the so-called “spaghetti gang,” a term used by authorities for people allegedly involved in cable theft.

According to police, the suspects allegedly pretended to be workers of a telecommunications company.

They reportedly wore reflectorized vests and brought traffic cones, apparently making their activity look like legitimate telco work.

Police further said their investigation indicated that the stolen cable wires were allegedly being sold to junk shops after being removed.

The six suspects declined to give a detailed statement regarding the accusations against them.

“Sa korte na lang po ang magsasalita,” one of them said when asked for comment, according to the report.

Police records also showed that one of the suspects had previously been arrested in connection with gámbling and illegal drùgs, Unang Balita reported.

The six men may face a complaint for alleged violation of the Anti-Cable Television and Cable Internet Tapping Act of 2013.

Authorities recovered the vehicle, the cable wires, and the tools reportedly used by the group as part of the case.

In another report, A school in Barangay Sauyo, Quezon City was robbed of more than P313,000 worth of equipment and cash after two men allegedly entered the compound past midnight on Saturday. According to James Agustin’s report on GMA’s Unang Balita on August 26, CCTV footage showed one man climbing over a railing inside the school. He was later seen inside the administrative office, where he appeared to search through the area. His alleged accomplice was also captured by a security camera.

Meanwhile, a man was shot dead outside a school in Barangay Prinza, Teresa, Rizal, on Thursday afternoon, triggering a police manhunt and leaving his family grieving. According to a report by GMA News' "Unang Balita," the victim was shot in the head at around 4 p.m. The gunman reportedly escaped immediately after the attack.
