Duterte made the remarks after attending the 128th Independence Day celebration in Davao City on Friday, where she was asked about the recent passing of the two student-athletes.

According to the Vice President, schools have a responsibility to immediately extend support and communicate with bereaved families in the aftermath of tragic incidents.

“Dapat kasi sa mga ganyan na mga panahon ay nauuna ‘yung pag-reach out nila sa pamilya at pagpapaintindi sa pamilya kung ano ‘yung nangyari at ano ‘yung mga kailangan nilang gawin... the family and the school,” she said.

Duterte said she believes the response of the school was insufficient not only in the case of Baterbonia but also in the death of another player.

She also emphasized that incidents involving the deaths of students should not be treated as ordinary cases.

The Vice President's comments came as discussions continue regarding the circumstances surrounding the deaths of the two young athletes.

Baterbonia previously represented the Davao Eagles in the Palarong Pambansa after earning an off-campus scholarship and being admitted to Ateneo de Davao University.
