On Thursday, June 11, Padilla posted images from his visit to the wake of Baterbonia, the 19-year-old Ateneo basketball player who tragically died by drowning during a team-building and training activity in Aurora.
The wake was held at Arlington Memorial Chapels and Crematory in Quezon City.
Among the photos shared by the senator was one showing him wearing Baterbonia’s basketball jersey while paying his respects to the young athlete. Padilla also included a short but emotional caption expressing his sadness over the teenager’s untimely passing.

“The world was his, but gone too soon!” wrote Padilla.
The post quickly attracted attention from social media users. While many appreciated the senator’s gesture and viewed it as a sincere act of sympathy toward the grieving family, others questioned certain aspects of the post.
One image also showed a fist-bump gesture commonly associated with former President Rodrigo Duterte and his supporters, which became another talking point among commenters.
Several supporters defended Padilla, saying he has consistently extended assistance to people in need and that his visit should be viewed as an act of compassion.
“Ito ang isa sa pnka mabilis mag bigay ng tulong sa kahit na sino… ang iba nagpapa presscon pa lang at nag memeeting, si Robin Padilla nka punta na…”
“I really admire Sen. Robin's kindness. Natural na sa kanya ang pagiging matulungin. Kahit walang publicity, kahit di nya ipagkalat, alam mong handa siyang tumulong sa mga nangangailangan.”
Some netizens also encouraged Padilla to continue helping the athlete’s family.
However, not everyone reacted positively to the post.
As of writing, Padilla has not issued any statement regarding the differing reactions generated by his social media post. Despite the debate online, his visit brought renewed public attention to Baterbonia’s tragic death and the calls for support and justice for the young athlete’s family.
Robin Padilla, widely known as the "Bad Boy" of Philippine cinema, is a veteran Filipino actor, director, and politician who currently serves as a member of the Senate of the Philippines. After topping the 2022 senatorial elections, he successfully pivoted from headlining iconic action films to legislating, where he actively champions measures regarding cultural communities, entertainment industry worker rights, and constitutional reform.
In another report, Senator Robin Padilla asserted that he considers himself a “Good Boy” in the realm of politics, distancing himself from the “Bad Boy” label often associated with his public image. The actor-politician said that, in his view, corrupt officials are the ones who truly deserve the “Bad Boy” tag in public service. Padilla also admitted that he finds the entertainment industry more enjoyable compared to politics, citing the heavier responsibilities carried by government officials.
Meanwhile, Mariel Rodriguez Padilla shared that she remains unfazed by the political controversies surrounding her husband, Senator Robin Padilla. The television host said that her faith and personal strength help her cope with criticism directed at their family. Mariel also revealed that she and Robin seldom discuss politics at home, choosing instead to focus on their children and family life. Despite ongoing public scrutiny, she expressed her continued support for her husband and said she consistently prays for his safety and well-being.
