Interior and Local Government Secretary Eduardo Año cited the studies of the World Health Organization (WHO) about the possible number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines.

KAMI learned that the country could reach thousands of coronavirus cases if the efforts to contain the virus fail.

In a report by the Philippine Star (authored by Emmanuel Tupas), Año said that a person positive for COVID-19 could possibly infect around 100 people if not isolated immediately.

“Kapag hindi tayo gumawa ng drastic actions, in five months we (could) have 75,000 positive cases,” Año said during an interview with dzBB.

Año urged the Filipinos to follow the authorities as the 30-day community quarantine in Metro Manila is being implemented to ensure their safety.

He also said that a total lockdown is possible if the coronavirus situation worsens in the Philippines, just like what happened in Italy.

As reported by the ABS-CBN News, Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said that a “total lockdown” could happen over Metro Manila following the community quarantine issues that came today.

“This is a matter of national survival. We have to be resigned to that fact. This is a matter of life and death. The only way to stop this is for us to help ourselves,” Panelo said.
