In an episode of Kara David's “i-Listen” published on October 21, the veteran actress recalled the tragic incident on September 19, 2014, when her mother was brutally murdered inside their home in Scout Lazcano, Quezon City. Zenaida suffered more than 30 stab wounds, and the suspect was identified as Michael Flores, their house cleaner.

Authorities considered robbery as a possible motive for the crime. Reports said investigators identified Flores through CCTV footage and the clothes he allegedly left at the crime scene.

Years after the tragedy, Cherry Pie chose to forgive Flores and even visited him in prison. She explained that forgiveness was a lengthy process that took three years.

“Ano naman ‘yun, process. Ang tagal. Three years,” she said.

The actress also credited her 15 years of involvement in prison ministry and her participation in a coalition against the death penalty for helping her understand people deprived of liberty (PDLs).

Cherry Pie explained that her previous encounters with people in prison helped her approach the situation with greater openness and understanding. However, she emphasized that her faith was ultimately what sustained her through the painful experience.

“Pero kasi, 'di ba, 'pag may nangyari sa'yo 'yung gano'n, wala ka naman talaga ibang kakapitan kundi faith eh. ‘Yun lang naman talaga,” she continued.

Cherry Pie recalled how her journey toward forgiveness began during a Mass while she was praying the “Our Father.” A particular line from the prayer prompted her to reflect on her own feelings.

“One time sa Mass, when I was praying ‘Our Father,’ tas 'yung ‘Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our sins.’ So parang may [sumagi] lang na parang humihingi ako ng tawad. Pero punong-puno ng galit, tsaka ng vengeance ng paghihiganti 'yung puso ko,” she shared.

The actress admitted that, in the months following her mother's death, she naturally felt anger and the desire to seek revenge against the person responsible.

“Kasi siyempre, 'di ba, natural, in that process, let's say, 'yung mga earlier months ‘yun eh, siyempre, andiyan 'yung gusto mong gumanti. Nagalit ka, gusto ipa ganiyan,” she explained.

As she continued reflecting on her emotions, Cherry Pie began questioning her desire for revenge and why she wanted to forgive the man who had caused her family so much pain.

“And then, ‘yun 'yung question ko. Bakit parang gusto kong patawarin?,” she said.

With guidance from priests close to her, the actress gradually worked toward forgiveness. She continued talking through her emotions and processing the tragedy until she reached a point where she could let go of her desire for revenge.

“Tapos, doon na ako nag-pathway to forgiveness. Tapos, nag-talk na ako nang nag-talk. So, ‘yun. Three years until 'yung it happened,” Cherry Pie recounted.
