The body of Pope Francis has been placed in an open coffin during the rite of the declaration of death in Santa Marta residence in Vatican City.

The rite confirming the death and the placement of the late pope’s body in the coffin took place on Monday evening, April 21 (0800 GMT).
The official declaration of death was read aloud and was validated by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Vatican camerlengo. The ceremony lasted just under an hour.
According to Vatican News, the pontiff’s body will be transferred from the chapel of the Casa Santa Marta to St. Peter’s Basilica on Wednesday at 9:00 AM to lie in state until his funeral on Saturday at 10:00 AM (0800 GMT).

As per ABS-CBN News, aligned with the pope’s request, his body is placed inside a wooden casket instead of a bier, which was used for the funeral of the previous popes.
It was also the late Argentine pontiff’s wish to be placed in a simple wooden casket with a zinc lining instead of the traditional three layers of coffins made of cypress, lead, and oak.

Earlier, the 88-year-old pope revealed he was suffering from a "strong cold," which the Vatican later described as bronchitis.
