A minor student was found carrying a loaded .45-caliber pistol inside a school in Catarman, Northern Samar, prompting authorities to intervene and review security measures on campus, a report on GMA News has shown.

The incident came to light after another student informed a teacher that their classmate was allegedly carrying a firearm inside their classroom, according to a statement released by the Police Regional Office 8 (PRO 8) on Friday.
The teacher immediately reported the matter to school officials, who then contacted the Catarman Municipal Police Station.
Police officers responded and recovered the firearm from the minor. The weapon reportedly had no serial number and was accompanied by four magazines and 10 rounds of ammunition.

“Authorities recovered from the minor one .45 caliber pistol without a serial number, four magazines, and ten rounds of ammunition,” the PRO 8 said.
The student reportedly told authorities that the firearm belonged to the minor's father.
Following the discovery, personnel from the Women and Children Protection Desk assisted the student. The minor was later referred to the Municipal Social Welfare and Development Office for assessment and appropriate intervention in accordance with existing laws and procedures.
Authorities did not indicate whether the firearm had been used in any incident before it was discovered inside the school.
After the incident, police met with school officials to discuss ways to strengthen security measures and help protect students, teachers and other school personnel.
PRO 8 chief Police Brigadier General Romano Cardiño emphasized the need for cooperation among schools, authorities and families in maintaining campus safety.
“Ang kaligtasan ng ating mga mag-aaral ay isang responsibilidad na dapat nating pagtulungan,” Cardiño said.
He also said police would continue working with schools and other partners to promote a secure learning environment across Eastern Visayas.
“Patuloy nating paiigtingin ang pakikipagtulungan ng PRO 8 sa mga paaralan at iba pang katuwang upang mapanatili ang ligtas na learning environment sa buong Eastern Visayas,” the police official added.
PRO 8 also reminded parents and guardians to properly secure firearms at home and prevent children and unauthorized individuals from gaining access to them.
In another report, a police officer died after a speeding SUV crashed into a roadside barricade while he was on duty in Barangay Butuay, Misamis Occidental. CCTV captured the incident, while authorities said the driver failed an alcohol breathalyzer test and now faces complaints for reckless imprudence resulting in ho*micide and drunk driving.
Meanwhile, a motorcycle rider died after crashing into a parked heavy truck in Binalonan, Pangasinan. The truck had reportedly stopped along the highway while its driver rested. The rider was rushed to a hospital but did not survive, as police continue to investigate the crash.
