Patrolman Marianeto Gabumpa Jr. sustained serious injuries after a man allegedly struck him several times with an iron pipe inside the Smokey Mountain Police Community Precinct (PCP) in Tondo, Manila.

The incident was featured in GMA Integrated News' Unang Balita, which also showed CCTV footage of the injured officer being assisted by fellow policemen as he was taken out of the precinct on the afternoon of July 14.

According to the police, the suspect had been arrested at around 5 a.m. after a tracking company reported him for alleged trespassing. Authorities said security guards claimed the man appeared to be hallucinating before he was taken into police custody.

One officer explained the situation, saying, "Ang claim ng mga gwardya is nagha-hallucinate. Tapos kung ano-ano daw sinasabi. Sa pulis lang daw siya susuko."

While waiting for the complainant and the suspect's relatives to arrive, the man reportedly became aggressive. CCTV footage also showed him attempting to escape before several officers managed to bring him back inside the station.

Police said that after being taken to the rear portion of the precinct, the suspect grabbed an iron pipe and repeatedly struck Patrolman Gabumpa.

The officer suffered multiple blows to his head and finger before three policemen were able to overpower the suspect and take the weapon away.

Although he has already been discharged from the hospital, the injuries left a lasting impact. Police confirmed that his index finger had to be amputated because of the severe damage.

An officer expressed concern over the effect of the injury on Gabumpa's career, saying,

"Right-handed kasi siya. Paano siya makakapagbigay ng panganib sa pamamagitan ng paggamit ng baril eh triggering yung naputol sa kanya. Kapag pinilit niya 'yun, hindi na siya magiging effective."

Because the injured finger is used for pulling the trigger, authorities said the officer may no longer be fit to perform duties that require firearm handling.

The police are now exploring the possibility of helping Gabumpa apply for Total Permanent Physical Disability (TPPD) benefits through the National Police Commission (Napolcom) so he may receive his pension earlier if he is declared permanently disabled.

Meanwhile, the suspect remains in the custody of the Raxabago Police Station. He is expected to face several charges, including disobedience, trespassing, direct assault, and frustrated h*micide.

In other news, a tragic altercation in Bocaue resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman after she was reportedly attacked by her younger half-brother. Law enforcement officials indicated that the conflict was triggered by a disagreement regarding a request for fare money. The victim suffered several fatal injuries during the encounter and was pronounced dead prior to her arrival at the local hospital. Following the incident, the 33-year-old suspect was taken into custody by police and is anticipated to be charged with murder.
