The incident was featured in GMA News' Unang Balita, where CCTV footage from Barangay Balong-Bato showed the suspect accompanying the child along E. Roman Street on June 1.

According to barangay officials, the girl did not know the man before the encounter. The footage showed the suspect walking with the child and moving around different parts of the neighborhood. Authorities observed that they repeatedly went back and forth through the area, leading officials to believe that the man may have intentionally confused the young victim.

Barangay officials said the child was on her way to enroll in school when the man approached her. He reportedly introduced himself as someone who knew her mother and told the girl that he had something to give to her parents.

"Ini-report nga na meron pong isang lalaki na nagpakilala na kilala daw ang kanyang ina at sasamahan siya at meron daw pong ibibigay para sa kanyang ina hanggang sa makuha na po ang bagong cellphone ng ating biktimang batang babae," a barangay official said in the report.

The suspect reportedly accompanied the girl to the school before continuing to walk around the area with her.

After realizing what had happened, the victim sought help from a resident she encountered. With the resident's assistance, she was able to report the incident to the barangay authorities.

The case has since been referred to the police, who are now searching for the man seen in the CCTV footage.

Barangay officials also revealed that the suspect may have used a similar scheme in a previous incident involving eight-year-old twin girls in the same community last May.

"Same po yung modus nung lalaki. Magpapakilala siya na nakakilala niya yung mga magulang ng biktima at ipapaikot-ikot po sa ating barangay," the official added.

Authorities continue to investigate the case while reminding parents and children to be cautious when approached by strangers, even those who claim to know family members.
