The unimaginable pain of a grieving mother filled the halls of a funeral home as a family demanded answers.

Rovelyn Baterbonia, the mother of newly-recruited Ateneo Blue Eagles player Rene Baterbonia, suffered an emotional breakdown inside the chapel of the Arlington funeral home. Loud screams and painful cries could be heard echoing from the room after she sat down with officials from Ateneo De Manila University.

According to ABS-CBN Sports' post, the atmosphere turned incredibly heavy during the private meeting.

"Rene Baterbonia's mother, Rovelyn, can be heard screaming and crying in anguish inside the chapel at Arlington funeral home after meeting with representatives from Ateneo De Manila University," the caption stated in the now-viral Facebook post.

The tragic meeting comes just days after a devastating accident shocked the local sports community.

On June 8, 2026, Rene Baterbonia and, Divine Adili, tragically lost their lives due to drowning during a team-building session in Dipaculao, Aurora. Rene, a 19-year-old star who had just moved to the campus a week prior, and Divine, a 21-year-old player from Nigeria, were swept away by a sudden strong current.

As the family deals with the sudden loss of a bright young life, emotions remain incredibly raw. Reporters have tried to get a statement from the school officials. However, the university representatives chose to make a quiet exit.

"The management of Arlington said the Ateneo representatives have left the building, saying that they were not yet ready to face the media," the report noted in the viral Facebook post.

The university earlier released a statement expressing their deepest condolences, saying they are committed to providing full support to the families of both players. Meanwhile, government authorities and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have launched a full investigation into the safety protocols of the athletic trip.

The broadcaster expressed grief over the tragedy while calling for facts and accountability to emerge through the ongoing investigation. Ho said silence could fuel speculation and false narratives as the public seeks answers about what happened. She also voiced confidence that Ateneo and the investigating bodies will do what is right in addressing the incident.

Meanwhile, other athletes, celebrities, and basketball fans mourned the passing of two Ateneo players. The tragedy reportedly happened during a team-building activity in Dipaculao, Aurora which has since been investigated. Authorities said there was no indication of foul play in the incident. Ateneo de Manila University expressed grief and asked for prayers and privacy for the families affected.
